Evesham’s Extraordinary Women

2018 is a special year; not only does it mark 100 years since the end of the Great War but it also marks 100 years since the passing of the Representation of the People Act. The Act was the first to allow women over the age of 30, with property, the right to vote.

Throughout the early part of the Twentieth Century the role of women changed drastically. The Suffragette movement saw unprecedented radical campaigning and activism by women in a bid to win the vote. The Great War led to the massive mobilisation of the female workforce as women were recruited to jobs previously held by men and in 1919 the first female MP, Nancy Astor, was elected to Parliament.

Throughout the C20th and C21st the impact of women has been extraordinary and the Almonry wishes to mark the achievement of local women in 2018.
Launching on March 8th 2018 (International Women’s Day) the Extraordinary Women project will focus on those women from Evesham and the Vale who have made a difference.

This is where we need your help. We are looking for Evesham’s extraordinary women. They don’t have to be rich or famous or to have made an impact on the international or national ‘stage’ but they have to be extraordinary!
Was someone in your family a Suffragette? Did your great Aunt work as a Land Girl in the Vale during WWI or WWII? Is there a woman who has inspired or encouraged you? These are the women we want to celebrate in 2018.
All the women nominated must be born or have lived/worked in Evesham and the Vale, they can be from the distant past or you can nominate your Gran, your mum or your sister. The nominees will be part of our Extraordinary Women pop up exhibition and online gallery launched in September for Heritage Open Days (6th-9th and 13th -16th)
